The affair of Epidamnus began it. Epidamnus is a city on the right hand as you sail into the Ionian Gulf. Its neighbors are the Taulantians, an Illyrian people. The city was colonized by Corcyraeans, but founded by Phalius, son of Eratocleides, a Corinthian of the lineage of Heracles, who according to the custom of the mother-city took his leaders from Corinth. The colony grew in power and population, but after many years of civil strife, it was brought low by a war with the neighboring barbarians, and lost the greater part of its power. Finally, the people of Epidamnus, being hard pressed by the war, sent their mother-city Corcyra a supplication, begging them not to let them perish, but to bring them aid and reconcile the exiles. This they did as suppliants, sitting in the temple of Hera. The Corcyraeans, however, refused to listen to their prayers, and they were sent away without success.
