The Epidamnians, seeing that they could expect no help from Corcyra, were in a state of perplexity. They sent to Delphi and asked the god whether they should hand over their city to the Corinthians, as their founders, and try to obtain some help from them. The god answered that they should hand over the city and place themselves under the protection of the Corinthians. The Epidamnians went to Corinth and, according to the oracle, handed over the colony, reminding the Corinthians that their founder was a Corinthian, and telling them of the oracle. The Corinthians, partly because they thought the colony belonged to them as much as to the Corcyraeans, and partly out of hatred for the Corcyraeans, because they neglected them, readily undertook the protection of the city. They sent a garrison to Epidamnus, and invited any who wished to go and settle there, sending them under the same terms of equality and independence.
