When the Corcyraeans heard that the colony had been handed over to the Corinthians and that the city was being settled by them, they were very angry. They sailed with twenty-five ships to Epidamnus, and later with another fleet, and ordered the Epidamnians to receive back the exiles—for the exiles from Epidamnus had gone to Corcyra and pointed out the massacre that had taken place—and to send away the Corinthian garrison and settlers. The Epidamnians refused to obey these orders. Upon this, the Corcyraeans besieged the city with forty ships, accompanied by the exiles, and were joined by the Illyrians. The Corinthians, when they heard of the siege, prepared an expedition and sent out heralds to Epidamnus to proclaim that any who wished might depart in safety, but that those who remained would be treated as enemies. No one paid any attention to the heralds.
