⁶ The variants Puligere and Purigere both occur; and the first of them is still preserved in the name Huligere bana, which is the appellation of one of the divisions of the lands of Lakshmeshwar (see the map of the Dharwar Collectorate, four miles to the inch, 1874). A still older form of the name, Porigere, is found in the Lakshmeshwar inscription of the Yuvaraja Vikramaditya II., son of the Western Chalukya king Vijayaditya.—The Kanarese name was Sanskritised as Pulikara. And the town appears to have been also known as Raktapura.
