¹ The name of this district was derived from the Kanarese bele, 'growing corn, a crop,' and pola, hola, 'a field,' and means 'the country of luxuriant crops,' with reference to the fertility of the rich black-soil which constitutes one of its chief features. It was sometimes written Belvala, and, in Nâgarî characters, Beluvala.—Aunigere appears to have been the chief town of the district in A. D. 866 (Ind. Ant. Vol. XII. p. 220), and very possibly was always so.
