A Maratha agent at Allahabad thus reported on Clive’s performance, “the whole of Bengal from the sea coast up to Benares has become English, with no impediment between. Those who were hostile have become their creatures.” Thus the scheme of the conquest of Bengal upon which the Peshwa Balajirao had set his heart, was executed by a foreign power.
