Avanti became a great commercial centre. Here met the three routes, from the western coast with its seaports Surpāraka (Sopārā) and Bhṛgukaccha (Broach), from the Deccan and from Śrāvasti in Kośala (Oudh). The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea (Sec. 48) points out that from Ozene (Ujjain) were brought down to Barygaza commodities for local consumption or export to other parts of India, e.g., onyx-stones, porcelain, fine muslins, mallow-tinted cotton, etc.
