Avanti was also a great centre of learning. The Hindu astronomers reckoned their first meridian of longitude from Ujjayinī and the dramas of Kālidāsa were performed on the occasion of the Spring Festival before its Viceregal Court, c. 400 A.D.⁵ Nine famous persons known as Nava-Ratna (nine gems) adorned the court of Vikramāditya, king of Ujjayinī.
