¹ Dieselben Ansichten hat schon Sir Monier Monier-Williams ausgesprochen, Indian Wisdom ed. 2, p. 319, Note 1. Nachdem er gegen die Ansetzung des Râmâyaṇa um den Beginn unserer Zeitrechnung sich verwahrt hat, fährt er fort: Nor can I concur in the opinion that the Râmâyaṇa is later than, and to a certain extent a copy of the Buddhist story of Râma, called Daçaratha-jâtaka, in which Râma is represented as the brother of Sîtâ, and in which there are certain verses almost identical with verses in the present text of the Râmâyaṇa. Nor do I think that the great Indian Epic has been developed out of germs furnished by this or any other Buddhistic legends. Still less can I give in my adhesion to the theory that the Hindu Epics took ideas from the Homeric poems; or to the suggestion of Mr. Talboys Wheeler, that the story of the Râmâyaṇa was invented to give expression to the hostile feeling and contention between the Brâhmans and Buddhists of Ceylon, alleged to be represented by the Râkshasas.
