मेधा. on मनु II. 18. This verse refers to five classes of smṛti texts that cannot be based on श्रुति. दृष्टार्था च अविद्धकारणा च दृष्टार्थाविद्धकारणे (स्मृती); या च एषा संभवश्रुतिः is the fifth class, but the meaning is not clear. Sir Ganganath Jha in his translation of Medhātithi does not say whence this verse is taken, nor does he correctly render the words विगीता and दृष्टार्थाविद्धकारणे and he omits altogether the fourth pāda. The words या चैषा सम्भवश्रुतिः appear to mean 'that smṛti which declares its promulgation (by a sage) is not to be deemed to be based on Veda (since otherwise Veda will be held to be not nitya).
