In the 12th century A D. there was a Kapālamocanaghāṭ ¹⁴⁶⁴ situated on the Ganges. In a grant published in *E. I.* vol. IV p. 110 dated *saṃvat* 1178 (1122 A D.) the Emperor Govindacandra bestowed a village on a brāhmaṇa named Vyāsa after bathing at the Kapāla-mocanaghaṭṭa in Banaras where the Ganges flows to the north. The story of Kapālamocana-tīrtha is narrated in the Matsya-purāṇa, chap. 183. 84-103 and a reference is made to it in Kāśīkhaṇḍa 33. 116.
