Kauṭilya also gives calculations of the amounts of food obtainable from given quantities of grain of different kinds as they are cooked or treated in other ways, of oil that can be pressed from the different oil-seeds, and of thread that can be spun from given quantities of cotton (*Kārpāsa*) and flax or jute (*Kshauma*) fibre.
