The *Arthaśāstra* gives a long list of animals, fishes, and game-birds (*vihāra-pakshiṇo*) which are protected against violence or capture (*hiṁsā-* *vādhebhyo rakshyāḥ*). There is a special declaration for the protection against slaughter (*avadhya*) or slaughter by torture (*klishta-ghātaṁ ghātayaścha*) of the milch cow, the calf, and the stud-bull.
