There was also provision for State control of sale and purchase of commodities and of prices under the Superintendent of Commerce. He should be conversant with the prevailing prices of commodities (*argha-* *vit*). He controlled stocks of grain and other merchandise by issuing licences (*anujñātāḥ*) to traders.
