The seventh century, so fertile in drama and Kāvya, witnessed the composition of some curious works. The Bhaṭṭikāvya, attributed without adequate reason to Bhartṛihari and belonging probably to this period, seeks to combine grammatical instruction and poetic diction with a narration of the tale of the Rāmāyaṇa. It upholds the orthodox Brahmanical order. But its political touches have nothing novel about them.
