This review of the Quaternary history of India highlights some of the most intriguing characteristics of this land-mass. In the sub-Himalayan region the terraces which seem to have been occupied during prehistoric times have been cut into the Boulder Conglomerates and the tectonic activities which imparted tilts and mild folding of them and their subsequent erosion causing a flight of terraces. Thus the earliest Stone Age industries in the Himalayan region should be placed in the Upper Pleistocene. The only exception is the tools found at PAHALGAM in Kashmir valley which occur in possible Middle Pleistocene deposits. The Plio-Pleistocene boundary [9.7.1] has no direct relevance with the prehistoric cultures of India as no industries have yet been found in the Lower Pleistocene deposits.
