The fame of Orissa as a centre of culture and learning reached even beyond the frontiers of India to China during the Bhauma rule. From the history of China it is known that the Bhauma ruler Śubhākaradeva sent the manuscript of a religious treatise along with a letter (now preserved in China) to the Chinese emperor towards the close of the 8th century. The episode, apart from revealing cultural relations with China, is a tribute to the culture and learning of Orissa during the Bhauma era. On the whole Orissa attained unprecedented heights in art and culture during the Bhauma rule.
