Towards the beginning of the 9th century the Bhauma kingdom broke up in confusion and in the sequel vassals of the Bhaumas established themselves in their own regions. Of them the Bhañjas of Mayurbhanj came to limelight in w. Orissa not only as powerful rulers but also as great patrons of art. The sprawling remains of KHICHING indicate that under the Bhañja chiefs KHICHING (Khijjiṅga-koṭṭa) was a prosperous town where Brāhmaṇism, Buddhism and Jainism flourished at an equal space and a distinctive school of art and architecture had grown up in the region. A small-scale excavation brought to light the partial remains of a brick quadrangular structure, appearing to be a monastery.
