v2.c42.s2.t5.56

The prætorians were the flower of the army, and were recruited exclusively from Italy, or from the more Romanized provinces of Spain, Noricum, and Macedonia. Their pay was double that of the legionaries, and their term of service was limited to sixteen years, whereas the others were obliged to serve twenty. They were the immediate guardians of the emperor's person, and the arbiters of the empire. Their insolence grew with their power, and they soon learned to despise the authority of the senate, and to treat the emperors themselves as their creatures.
