§173. We continue to deal with the "stoppage" (samvara) by considering its media in the sequence of groups established by Umāsvāti T. 9 in starting from the number of the sub-members. Many of these sub-members will be found in more than one group. Since the Canon knows but some of them, it is ignorant of their common aim as such. First we have the control (gutti) of the mind, the speech, and the body (Thāṇ. 111 b; Samav. 8a). In each of these cases, acc. to Utt. 24, 19ff., it represents itself by refraining from samrambha, samārambha, and ārambha, by which the comm. (comp. also Sthān. on Thāṇ. 403b) understand two stages of preparation and the performance of forbidden thinking, speaking and acting. The same relate the 1st and 2nd gutti to the four possibilities of "true, wrong, either and neither of the two" (and hence in each of them attentiveness is asked for), and the physical gutti to the omission of an action doing harm to other beings. Though all this was comprised by the ārambha, etc. already, Umāsvāti in commenting on T. 9, 4 is, on the whole, more concrete in interpreting the three gupti.
