The above remarkable ‘change in the paradigm’ has been caused by the discoveries of a large number of Pre-Harappan (vide Table 2.1), Mature-Harappan and Late-Harappan sites. The earliest site discovered so far is that of Mehargarh (also spelled as Mehrgarh) whose antiquity (vide Table 2.2) goes back to the seventh millennium BC. (Jarrige, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1984) A brief summary of the findings at Mehargarh may be presented below:
