Gradually, mankind learnt to follow the dip of the ore-body underground, and started digging or (underground) mining. Such ancient mines need not be ‘excavated’ any further, but merely explored. Datable antiquities in the debris of the ancient mine-shaft should be investigated. Mining archaeology of this type has barely begun in India.
