In the eleventh century AD text Yuktikalpataru, the author king Bhoja mentioned a list of places where swords were manufactured from Indian steel: Sri Lanka, Mysore, Surat, Nepal, Varanasi, Magadha, Anga (Bhagalpur) and Kalinga (Orissa). The Bengal-Bihar-Orissa centres had the benefit of accessibility of good quality iron ores. Orissa particularly specialised in making structural iron pieces such as beams.
