v1.c16.15
The Carakasaṃhitā is primarily a treatise on kāyacikitsā,41 which for that reason occupies the first place in the list of the eight divisions (aṅga) of āyurveda (Sū.30. 28).42 Passages indicating that other subjects, such as śalya, śālā kya, etc., do not belong to its domain are found at several places,43 particularly in the Cikitsāsthāna. Specialists in surgery are referred to as dhānvantarīyāḥ,44 śalyavidaḥ,45 śalyahartāraḥ,46 vraṇacintakas,47 and kṣāratantravidaḥ.48 Specialists in śālā kya were also known.49
