The Sāmkhyas say that the effect is existent in the cause because of the following five reasons: (*i*) a thing that is non-existent cannot be produced, (*ii*) because of the fact that some material cause is required for producing the desired effect, (*iii*) because of the impossibility of everything being produced (from everything), (*iv*) because only those causes that are capable can produce that which is possible to produce, (*v*) because of the existence of the effect. Moreover, the Sāmkhyas maintain that the *Pradhāna* (Primordial Matter) is the cause because of the measurability or limitations of different objects. (*Bhedānāmtu parimānāt*), because of the power (to produce) and the power of action (*Śaktitaḥ pravṛtteśca*); because of the distinctions between cause and effect (*Kāraṇa kārya vibhāgāt*) and lastly because of the integrity of the universal forms (*Avibhāgādvaiśvarūpyasya*).
