But it was the doctrine of *Karuṇā* that satisfied the masses most. According to this doctrine the Bodhisattva should sacrifice everything, his personal happiness and even his own merits for the suffering humanity. He must strive hard through a continuous chain of births and rebirths for the emancipation of his fellow beings.¹
