¹ The doctrine of Karuṇā was perhaps, first, preached in the Sukhāvatīvyūha, a work of about the first century B.C. It was commented upon by Nāgārjuna in his Daśabhūmivibhāṣāśastra. The doctrine was fully evolved in works like Kāraṇḍavyūha etc. See MaxMuller, Sukhāvatīvyūha, pp. 5-6-7 and p. XIX, also Kāraṇḍavyūha, pp. 21, 22, 84.
