This science called Hetuvidyā in Sanskrit, as we have seen in our review of various curricula before the rise of the University of Nālandā, was still in a formative state. Different schools of thought, Buddhist, Jain, Sāṃkhyā and others, had their own systems of Logic. And a student learning at Nālandā had to go through all the systems. For he was expected to defend the Buddhist-systems against others, and this he could not do well unless he knew the principles of other systems.
