The Long Āgama Sūtra 8.61

8.61

又告梵志：「汝將無謂佛為名稱，為尊重故，為導首故，為眷屬故，為大眾故，而說法耶？勿起此心！今汝眷屬盡屬於汝。我所說法，為滅不善，增長善法。」

He also told the wanderer, “Did you think the Buddha teaches the Dharma for no reason other than being honored … being a leader … having followers … having a great assembly? Don’t have such a thought. Now, your followers are all your own. The Dharma I teach is for ceasing what’s unskillful and increasing skillful qualities.”
