4.28

「爾時善友即喚其弟惡友：『此有賊刺我兩目，持寶珠去。』而惡友不應。兄便懊惱：『我弟惡友似為賊所殺。』如是高唱，聲動神祇，經久不應。爾時樹神即發聲言：『汝弟惡友是汝惡賊，刺汝兩目，持寶珠去。汝今喚惡友何為？』善友太子聞是語已，悵然飲氣，憂恚苦惱。

"At that time, Kalyāṇamitra called out to his younger brother Pāpamitra: 'A thief has pierced both my eyes here and taken the treasure pearl away!' But Pāpamitra did not answer. The elder brother then grieved: 'It seems my younger brother Pāpamitra has been killed by the thief.' As he cried out aloud in this way, his voice moved the deities, yet for a long time there was no answer. Then a tree spirit called out, saying: 'Your younger brother Pāpamitra is your evil thief! He pierced both your eyes and took the treasure pearl away. Why are you calling for Pāpamitra now?' When Prince Kalyāṇamitra heard these words, he choked with despondency and was consumed by grief and distress.
