"Good son! Bodhisattvas furthermore have four things: diligently cultivating vigor, destroying indolence, adorning bodhi, and gathering in sentient beings. For the sake of the path to bodhi, they cause [sentient beings] to cultivate vigor; their lying down is peaceful, their waking is peaceful, and they are free from all afflictions; wholesome dharmas increase, and their bodies experience peace and happiness—this is called benefiting oneself. The bodhisattva's vigor does not torment sentient beings by beating, hurling at, scolding, or reviling [them]—this is called benefiting others. Having relinquished this body, they experience human and celestial bliss, their bodies obtain great strength, and they attain the path to bodhi—this is called the great fruit. These are called the bodhisattva's four things of vigor. Bodhisattvas cultivate meditative absorption, destroy distracted minds, adorn bodhi, and gather in sentient beings. For the sake of the path to bodhi, they cause [sentient beings] to cultivate dhyāna; in the present [life] they experience worldly joy, and body and mind are tranquil—this is called knowing kindness. Because body and mind are tranquil, they do not torment sentient beings—this is called repaying kindness upon repaying kindness. Having relinquished this body, bodhisattvas receive pure bodies, secure, tranquil, and blissful, and attain great nirvāṇa—these are called the bodhisattva's four things of dhyāna.
