十、示在長者。文中二：初、通述意。「歎尊勝之德」者，即此十一段也。偏舉尊勝者，肇師云「凡人易以威順、難以理從，故大士每處其尊，以弘風靡之化。」故今云「德為物軌」等也。二、「言長」下，正釋文。「鄉閭懷勝」者，萬二千五百家為鄉。閭謂鄉里之門。羅什云「長者如今四姓豪族也。」

Tenth, manifesting among elders. The text has two parts: first, a general account of the intention. 'Praising the virtue of being noble and preeminent' refers to these eleven sections. Singling out the noble and preeminent, Master Sengzhao says: 'Common people easily submit to authority but follow principle with difficulty; therefore the Great Being constantly dwells in nobility to expand the conversion that sweeps through like wind.' Hence it now says, 'his virtue serves as a model for beings,' and so on. Second, from 'speaking of an elder' downward, is the proper explanation of the text. 'Respected by the neighborhoods': twelve thousand five hundred households constitute a township (xiang). A neighborhood gate (lü) refers to the gate of a village. Kumārajīva states: 'Elders are like the eminent clans of the four surnames today.'
