Second, the reproach regarding the ear and the other four sense faculties has two [parts]: first, showing the faults reproached. As for 'not understanding that the ear is empty,' etc.: not understanding that pleasing and displeasing sounds are like echoes in an empty valley, he was caused to fear the pleasing sounds of joy and pleasure in rich households, while not finding difficult the displeasing sounds of sorrow and suffering in poor households. Not understanding that fragrance and stench are dependent on wind, and that wind has neither fragrance nor stench—since fragrance is equal with wind—there was in fact no thick fragrance of rich households impeding the path that needed to be avoided, nor was there any rank stench of poor households that was non-impeding and to be approached. Not understanding that dharmas have no fixed nature, and that it is due to discriminatively grasping at signs that one calls something a 'flavor'—if one does not discriminate, then it is not a flavor. Therefore, one may eat celestial delicacies without defilement, and consume bitter, astringent foods without aversion; why must one abandon rich, exquisite food to take poor, coarse food? The middle two are omitted, hence it says 'and so forth.' Regarding 'attaining realization like wisdom': Jingxi says, 'Conforming to the principle like wisdom, because of realizing and attaining the principle, one should, at the time of touch, touch the true reality as if with wisdom.' Because of not understanding this, upon exiting contemplation and receiving touch, his mind had preferences of rejection and acceptance regarding the beddings of rich and poor. As for 'grasping the bad and abandoning the good,' he grasped the four sense objects of poor neighborhoods and abandoned the four sense objects of wealthy houses.
