First, as for the inconceivability of hearing and not hearing, the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā states: "All śrāvakas and others, whether they have heard or not heard, all wish to hear; they should study prajñā." The Dazhidulun states: "When the Buddha preached the Inconceivable Liberation Sūtra, the śrāvakas in the assembly all failed to hear it—that is, when the Buddha first attained enlightenment and preached the Avataṃsaka Sūtra." Someone claimed: The Inconceivable Liberation Sūtra cited by the Dazhidulun is the Vimalakīrti Sūtra. That person had neither read the Avataṃsaka nor consulted the Dazhidulun; hence they made this error. This inconceivability was heard only by bodhisattvas, while the two vehicles did not hear it. When the Vimalakīrti Sūtra expounds the inconceivable, both the great and the small hear it together; hence it is called the inconceivability of hearing and not hearing.
