Rules of conduct for disciples: (At that time, the disciples did not practice the rules of a disciple, entering villages without informing their upādhyāya, and so forth. He addressed the bhikṣus: "From this day forward, the rules of a disciple are to be instituted, causing the disciple to practice the rules of a disciple toward his upādhyāya." The eight rules of mutual conduct are as before. Furthermore, without informing the upādhyāya, he must not enter a village, must not go to another's house, must not accompany another bhikṣu or take another bhikṣu as a companion, must not give, must not receive, must not assist with saṃgha duties, must not accept another's assistance with saṃgha duties, must not shave another's hair, must not have another shave his hair, must not enter a bathhouse, must not rub down another's body, must not let another rub down his body, must not go to a daytime dwelling room, must not go to a charnel ground, must not go outside the boundary, and must not travel to other regions. In the early morning, he must enter the upādhyāya's room to receive instruction in reciting sūtras and to inquire about their meaning; he must remove the chamber pot; he should announce when the time has arrived, and so forth in detail. He must inquire after the upādhyāya three times a day: morning, noon, and evening. He must perform two duties for the upādhyāya without declining due to hardship: first, repairing the living quarters; second, mending and washing robes. Whatever the upādhyāya instructs in accordance with the Dharma must all be carried out. If he is sent to travel in various directions, he must not decline on false pretexts; if he declines, he is to be dealt with in accordance with the Dharma. From this day forward, the rules of conduct for disciples are instituted; if one does not practice them, he is to be dealt with in accordance with the Dharma. These practices toward an ācārya are also like this; because the text is identical, they are not set forth.)
