毘尼有五事答：一、序，二、制，三、重制，四、修多羅，五、隨順修多羅。有五法名為持律：知犯，知不犯，知輕，知重，廣誦二部戒。復有五法：四法同前，第五、廣誦毘尼。復有五法：四法同前，第五、住毘尼而不動。復有五法：四法同前，第五、諍事起善能除滅。有五種持律：誦戒序，四事，十三事，二不定，廣誦三十事；是初持律。若廣誦九十事，是第二持律。若廣誦戒毘尼，是第三持律。若廣誦二部戒毘尼，是第四持律。若都誦毘尼，是第五持律。（是中春秋冬，應依上四種持律；若不依住，突吉羅。夏安居應依第五持律；若不依住者，波逸提。）

The vinaya has five items of response: first, introduction; second, prohibition; third, repeated prohibition; fourth, sūtra; fifth, conformity to the sūtra. There are five dharmas by which one is called an upholder of the Vinaya: knowing offenses, knowing non-offenses, knowing light offenses, knowing grave offenses, and extensively reciting the two divisions of the precepts. There are another five dharmas: four dharmas the same as before, and fifth, extensively reciting the Vinaya. There are another five dharmas: four dharmas the same as before, and fifth, abiding immovably in the Vinaya. There are another five dharmas: four dharmas the same as before, and fifth, when disputed matters arise, being well able to eliminate them. There are five kinds of upholders of the Vinaya: reciting the introduction to the precepts, the four matters, the thirteen matters, the two undetermined matters, and extensively reciting the thirty matters—this is the first upholder of the Vinaya. If one extensively recites the ninety matters, this is the second upholder of the Vinaya. If one extensively recites the precepts and the Vinaya, this is the third upholder of the Vinaya. If one extensively recites the two divisions of the precepts and the Vinaya, this is the fourth upholder of the Vinaya. If one completely recites the Vinaya, this is the fifth upholder of the Vinaya. (In this context, during spring, autumn, and winter, one should depend upon the upper four kinds of upholders of the Vinaya; if one does not dwell in dependence upon them, it is a duṣkṛta. During the summer retreat, one should depend upon the fifth upholder of the Vinaya; if one does not dwell in dependence, it is a pāyattika.)
