On the passage "In which stages does one simultaneously cultivate how many cognitions?": below this is the sixth section, explaining the cultivation of cognitions with reference to stages. Within this: first, explaining cultivation with reference to the path of seeing; second, explaining cultivation with reference to the path of cultivation; third, explaining cultivation with reference to the stage beyond training; fourth, explaining cultivation with reference to other stages; fifth, explaining cultivation with reference to supporting stages; sixth, comprehensively clarifying the meaning of the four kinds of cultivation. This is the general question. In general, there are four kinds of cultivation: acquisition (prāptibhāvanā), practice (āsevanābhāvanā), antidote (pratipakṣabhāvanā), and expulsion (vinodanābhāvanā). Below this, the explanation is given provisionally with reference to the two cultivations of acquisition and practice. Furthermore, the Nyāyānusāra states: "First, one should investigate: what is called cultivation? It means repeatedly practicing wholesome conditioned phenomena, causing them to be complete and sovereign. It is not defiled or indeterminate phenomena, because they lack superior agreeable fruits. It is not wholesome unconditioned phenomena, because they do not exist within a mental continuity, and moreover unconditioned phenomena have no fruit."
