"Splits [...] in another place": it must be split in another place, not facing the World-Honoured One, because the speech of the Tathāgatas is awe-inspiring and solemn, and facing [him] one definitely lacks the power. (As for "in another place," this refers to inside Mount Gayāśīrṣa, where Devadatta split the Saṅgha, approximately three or four li north of Vulture Peak, while the Buddha was at Vulture Peak.) "Fools": one splits only ordinary beings (pṛthagjana), not noble ones, because all noble ones have realized the nature of phenomena (dharmatā). Some say that those who have attained patience (kṣānti) also cannot be split. The former explanation states that those who have not yet attained nobility are called fools; the latter explanation states that those who have not yet attained patience are called fools. The verse's word "fools" encompasses both of these meanings.
