The words "the eternal cutting off of previous causes" refers to cessation with remainder. "The subsequent cessation without remainder" refers to cessation without remainder. "The rest ultimately neither occurring nor arising is termed nirvāṇa": because of the causes and fruits of that saṃsāra, the rest of the afflictions, karma, and suffering that would otherwise arise ultimately do not arise; this is termed nirvāṇa. Furthermore, the eternal cutting off of previous causes is in the uninterrupted path; the subsequent cessation without remainder is in the path of liberation. Furthermore, the eternal cutting off of previous causes is in the preparatory stage, suppressing active manifestations of mind; the subsequent cessation without remainder is severing the seeds. "The rest ultimately not arising" means that the fruits do not arise because the causes have been severed; next is setting forth the essence.
