Secondary afflictions (upakleśa) are only three, stated in terms of the predominant ones. Regarding the entanglements (paryavasthāna) being eight, the eighty-ninth fascicle says: 'All afflictions, by virtue of actively functioning, are called entanglements. However, there are eight kinds that actively arise frequently during the four periods, and are therefore separately established: at the time of cultivating the training in morality, shamelessness and unconscionableness arise frequently as obstacles; at the time of cultivating the training in concentration, torpor and sleep arise frequently as obstacles; at the time of cultivating wisdom, restlessness and remorse arise frequently as obstacles. Among fellow practitioners, when mutually utilizing wealth and Dharma, envy and avarice serve as obstacles. Anger and hypocrisy do not serve as obstacles to the four affairs, and thus are not established as entanglements.'
