In the summarized meaning, 'having abandoned desire of the three realms, yet with respect to the holy intention of the Buddha there is still remainder' refers to the non-learners, who are called the wise. Being subsumed under the path of superior progress that has abandoned the greed of the desire realm refers to the fourth candidate [for arhatship], who is called 'unshakeable' because having already abandoned desire and greed, he gives rise to the path of superior progress. Alternatively, the second candidate together with its fruit and the third candidate give rise to the path of superior progress in order to abandon desire and greed; thus the non-returner's fruition is like floating on a pure pond. Furthermore, to reveal the three supreme benefits of liberation, samādhi, and wisdom: the contemplation of the various liberations contemplates radiant light, and because it is far removed from the hindrance to absorption, it becomes undefiled; samādhi contemplates emptiness and non-self, [and thus is] unshakeable; wisdom illuminates and severs [defilements], which is like floating on a pure pond. Furthermore, to reveal the fruits attained through the trainings in mind and wisdom: Jing says that it means the one liberated through wisdom is undefiled, like empty space with nothing adhering to it; the one liberated in both ways is like floating on a cool, full pond, taking no pleasure in the mire that is the ocean of saṃsāra.
