As for the passage from 'should contemplate the faculty of concentration and the power of concentration here' up to 'realizing the fruit of the non-returner': Jing says that the faculty of concentration and the power of concentration are attained both by persons of gradual progression and persons who leap over. If one is a person of gradual progression, the faculty and power of concentration are the threshold concentration. If one is a person who leaps over, they are generally based on the four dhyānas; hence it says: 'that is, all right concentration among the four dhyānas.' If one is a person who leaps over, relying on the concentration of the four fundamental dhyānas, one enters the path of seeing with the fundamental power of concentration and leaps over to realize the fruit of the non-returner; hence it says: 'namely, taking the various dhyānas as expedients to realize the fruit of the non-returner.' It omits mentioning that relying on the faculty and power of concentration of the threshold concentration serves as an expedient to enter the path of seeing and realize the fruits of stream-enterer, once-returner, and so forth. Ji says: Here, the first two fruits are attained only through the future [threshold concentration], advancing gradually up to the fruit of the non-returner where one attains the four dhyānas to generate supernormal knowledges; therefore, this is specifically stated. It does not mention the fourth fruit because it is not gradual and also because it is implied. Moreover, it is omitted from the explanation; within the four dhyānas one generates supernormal knowledges and bases of supernormal power, while other concentrations are not mentioned.
