Below, it clarifies that the varieties of cultivation are of twelve kinds. Ji says: "This explains that the uninterrupted path can sever, but does not mention the path of application. The Abhidharmasamuccaya clarifies that the adamantine-like concentration includes the path of application as well, but that is not the literal meaning. If it is severing seeds, only the uninterrupted path does so; if it is suppressing seeds, the path of application also has this function. That treatise, based on the meaning of suppressing seeds, includes the path of application in the adamantine-like concentration. This treatise, based on the difficulty of severing seeds, takes only the uninterrupted path." Regarding the cultivation of the path of superior progress: "meaning that by this... or not yet transcending the stage of culmination": Tai says: "Superior progress has two [meanings]: 1. Up until one generates the application directed toward the subsequent stage, all is called the path of superior progress; the treatise saying 'up to' refers to this. 2. In terms of severing afflictions, when the eighth grade is not yet exhausted, the mind of the application path of the ninth grade directed toward the stage of non-learning is entirely called superior progress."
