The treatise says: 'For those who teach that [forms] arise from seeds, for what reason is it said that the primary elements create derived forms? Answer: Because [derived forms] transform according to their transformations, and because they are established and sustained by them.' These three meanings correspond to the five meanings of productive cause, supportive cause, establishing cause, sustaining cause, and nourishing cause below. Here, 'transformation' encompasses the three kinds: productive cause, supportive cause, and nourishing cause; that is, the prior arising of the great elements is the productive cause; following their karma subsequently is the supportive cause; and the power of superior concentration is known to be a portion of the nourishing cause. As for the remaining: 'establishing' is the establishing cause, and 'sustaining' is the sustaining cause. Fascicle 3 of the 'Maulī Bhūmi' further provides an extensive explanation of the five causes and the reason for teaching that the great elements create [derived forms], together with these four explanations.
