Regarding the treatise statement: "The innate view of individuality (satkāyadṛṣṭi) is exclusively indeterminate in nature because of its frequent manifestation," and so forth: as stated in [fascicle] ninety-four below, "the mundane path does not subdue this, up until the diamond[-like samādhi] when it is finally severed." The text below in this fascicle says: "If the mundane path subdues what is to be cultivated (bhāvanāheya) and not what is to be seen (darśanaheya): within what is to be cultivated, it subdues desire or hatred, as well as adjacent deceitful pride and the ignorance associated with them. It does not treat the view of selfhood, the view of extremes, or the pride and desire accompanying them." Hence, in this treatise text it says there is "adjacent deceitful pride," excluding the pride adjacent to desire and hatred. This is as explained in [fascicle] ninety-four below. However, this one is exclusively indeterminate; how does it form nine grades? Which grade of the desire realm does it belong to? The Dharma Master says: This constitutes the final three grades. When the mundane path subdues the nine grades, it only subdues the first six grades, because these final three cannot be subdued. However, the first six grades also have nine grades; thus it says the mundane path subdues nine grades. Question: How are the first six grades divided into nine grades? If one grade is made into nine grades, there is the fault of fifty-four grades; if one grade is made into three grades, there is the fault of eighteen grades. Furthermore, if an anāgāmin does not sever the view of selfhood and the like of the desire realm, then they have not exhausted the nine grades of the desire realm, because the final three have not been severed. If this anāgāmin has not severed them and merely subdues defilements to attain the fruit of stream-enterer, not severing the defilements of the fifth grade and below, it is because they do not obstruct the fruit. Answer: That is not so. Rather, an anāgāmin also severs them according to the separation from the desire plane; only the view of selfhood associated with the seventh [consciousness] remains. Although an anāgāmin severs the nine grades, an ordinary worldling merely subdues the six grades of desire. Now the explanation says: These are also nine grades; they are explained according to whatever affliction they arise together with in a predominant manner. Or it is exclusively of the category of the ninth grade; an ordinary worldling also exhausts subduing the nine grades, yet within the ninth grade there is a remaining category not exhausted, which is precisely the view of selfhood. Therefore, the mundane path does not [sever it], because it is subtle within the ninth grade.
