7.120

釋障中，初辨障、後結之。五障中，「親近母色」者，數近女；「處顯失念」者，謂對眾前，逢勝顯境；「居隱放逸」者，獨居屏處，縱蕩邪思；「通處隱顯，由串習力」者，由前串習處隱或顯，生失念放逸；五、「雖勤方便」等者，修不淨時，邪思上勝，心隨淨相。

In explaining the obstacles, first the obstacles are distinguished, and then they are concluded. Among the five obstacles, "closely associating with maternal figures" means frequently drawing near to women; "losing mindfulness in prominent places" means encountering conspicuous, prominent objects in front of a crowd; "heedlessness in secluded living" means living alone in a private place and indulging in deviant thoughts; "pervading secluded and prominent places through the force of repeated habituation" means that due to prior habituation in places secluded or prominent, loss of mindfulness and heedlessness arise; fifth, "though exerting skillful means," etc., means that when cultivating impurity, deviant thoughts gain the upper hand and the mind follows pure characteristics.
