The seven kinds of obstacles are: (1) "the mind-scattered nature regarding the original task," wherein as one performs that task, the mind becomes scattered; (2) "the activity-nature of inclining toward the original task," wherein about to perform that task, one gives rise to eager inclination and active functioning; (3) "unskillfulness in manaskāra of skillful means," like an unwise person using the wealth of the Three Jewels without respectfully serving and attending upon masters and diligently inquiring, and thus not understanding skillful means; (4) "though residing in seclusion, up to disturbing their mind," solely due to failing to guard the sense-doors, so that defiled reflections arise; (5) "not knowing the measure in eating, so the body is not attuned"; (6) "because of the distraction of reflections, not delighting in śamatha"; (7) "because the body is not attuned, not cultivating the division of prajñā to observe all dharmas."
