In the fourth verse, there are three alternative interpretations. The second says: as for "all food and drink, speech, and wandering," these three correspond in sequence to the three places free from defilement in the verse. However, abiding in the signless state still has remaining suffering accompanying it, so it is not called extremely complete. Or, for self-benefit, food and drink and wandering are free from defilement; or, for the benefit of others, speech and wandering are unshakeable. The word "wandering" applies to both benefits above. Abiding in the signless state is like floating on a clear pond; remaining suffering accompanying it is called the ocean of saṃsāra when weary of mud. Furthermore, the wisdom-liberated, the bodily witness among those in training, and the doubly liberated correspond in sequence to the three places, because these three persons have exhausted the defilement-hindrance but have not exhausted the concentration-hindrance, so it is not that both kinds of hindrances are abandoned; therefore they are stated in that sequence.
