According to the Vimalakīrti, the emptiness of sentient beings is called selflessness, and the emptiness of the substance of dharmas is called emptiness. Therefore that sūtra states: 'Sentient beings are the site of enlightenment, because one knows they are selfless; all dharmas are the site of enlightenment, because one knows the emptiness of dharmas.' Emptiness and selflessness are simply different perspectives; naming them either way does no harm. Such are their names and meanings.
