Sixth, all kinds of forbearance: there are six and seven kinds. The six kinds are: 1. knowing that non-forbearance brings unpleasurable maturation, one practices forbearance out of fear; 2. giving rise to pity and compassionate affection, one practices forbearance out of goodwill; 3. for the sake of perfecting forbearance for anuttarā samyaksambodhi, one cultivates forbearance; 4. those who have gone forth possess the power of forbearance and must not fail to practice forbearance; 5. one cultivates forbearance because of taking up the Dharma; 6. one cultivates forbearance because, through habituation to one's gotra, one abides in one's intrinsic nature; [or] one cultivates forbearance because one sees all sentient beings merely as dharmas. The seven kinds are: forbearance toward all harms; forbearance from all persons; forbearance in all places; forbearance at all times; forbearance of all bodily action, by not striking; forbearance of speech, by uttering no unpleasing words; and forbearance of mind, by not giving vent to wrath.
